The map, region by region
Seven regions.
Seven different trips.
Indonesia is not one destination. A week in Java is temples and rail; a week in Raja Ampat is ferries and reef. Pick the region that matches the time you actually have.

Start with the calendar, not the map.
Monsoon timing decides more trips in Indonesia than distance does. The planning guide runs through seasons, routes and costs.

Three questions before you pick a region
01
How long do you have?
Under ten days, stay on one island or one island group. Java and Bali reward a week; Raja Ampat and Banda need more, mostly because of the crossings.
02
Which monsoon are you in?
May to October is drier across most of the country. The Maluku and Papua seasons run the other way: calmer seas from October to April. There is no single best month for all of Indonesia.
03
How do you want to move?
Java is rail. Sumatra is road. Maluku and Papua are ferry and small aircraft. Sulawesi mixes all three. Choose the transport you enjoy, then the region follows.
