Banda Neira
A town of colonial forts and a single main street, with Gunung Api rising straight out of the sea. The nutmeg groves are still there.
Region 05 / 07
Spice islands, Dutch forts and the richest reefs on earth. This is the far east of Indonesia, where the ferry timetable is a rumour and the water is worth the wait.
The shape of the trip
Maluku is a scatter of islands in the Banda Sea, famous for the nutmeg that once made a handful of them the most valuable real estate in the world. Papua’s Raja Ampat, at the western tip of New Guinea, is the centre of marine biodiversity: more fish species in one bay than in the whole Caribbean.
They are not close. Ambon to Sorong is a flight through Makassar, or a very long boat. The reward is a trip that feels like the edge of the map, with villages of a few hundred people and reefs that have never seen a dive boat.
Don’t miss
All three are reached by water. None of them have a fast route from an international airport.
A town of colonial forts and a single main street, with Gunung Api rising straight out of the sea. The nutmeg groves are still there.
The postcard: limestone towers around a shallow lagoon, with wooden stairs bolted to the rock. Go at opening; the platform fills by nine.
Three to four hours north of Waisai by outboard. The climb is short and sharp; the view is the one everybody recognises.
Practical
01
October to April brings calmer seas and the best conditions for the Banda crossing. July to September is windier but still diveable, with more mantas at some Raja Ampat sites. Avoid the Eid al-Fitr week if you want a boat to yourself.
02
Ambon (AMQ) has flights from Jakarta and Makassar. Sorong (SOQ) has the most connections to Raja Ampat; Denpasar and Ambon also work with a change. The fast ferry from Sorong to Waisai takes about two hours and leaves twice a day.
03
Public ferries connect Ambon and Banda, but schedules change with weather and cargo. Boats to the Raja Ampat islands are arranged through homestays or the village cooperative. Carry rupiah cash: ATMs in Waisai run dry and there are none on the islands.
A route that works
Land, buy supplies, and confirm the Banda ferry. The old town is worth an afternoon.
Fort Belgica, the nutmeg groves and a climb up Gunung Api if the trail is open. Four nights is not too many.
Back to Ambon, fly via Makassar, sleep near the harbour. Withdraw cash and buy a local SIM.
Morning ferry, park card at the office, then a boat to Arborek. The reef starts at the pier.
A long day boat north with a licensed operator. Leave before light and carry two litres of water each.
Ferry back, one last night, and the flight out the next morning.
