Tana Toraja
Boat-shaped houses, cliff balconies full of effigies, and funerals that can take a week. A guide is not optional if you want to understand what you are looking at.
Region 04 / 07
Four arms, one island. Cliff graves in the highlands, karst rivers in the south, and coral walls that divers cross the world for.
The shape of the trip
Sulawesi looks like an octopus on the map, and the comparison holds: each arm has its own language, food and coast. The south is Makassar and the Toraja highlands. The north is Manado, Bunaken and the Minahasa hills. The southeast is Wakatobi, a marine park with a small airport and a lot of reef.
The distances are long and the roads winding, so the route usually flies one leg. Makassar to Manado is two hours in the air or two days on the road; take the flight and spend the time underwater instead.
Don’t miss
Two days in the south, two in the north, and the long middle in between.
Boat-shaped houses, cliff balconies full of effigies, and funerals that can take a week. A guide is not optional if you want to understand what you are looking at.
A river through a forest of limestone towers, an hour north of Makassar. Go by canoe in the morning, when the water is still and the caves are cool.
Twenty minutes by boat from Manado and a wall of coral straight off the beach. The park fee is paid on the island; the sunsets are free.
Four islands and a marine park the size of a small country. Reach it via Kendari or direct to Wangi-Wangi, then slow down to boat speed.
Practical
01
May to October is dry across most of the island. Toraja’s funeral season runs roughly July to September, which is also the busiest time in the highlands. Bunaken and Wakatobi have good visibility through the same months; the wet season brings runoff and rougher crossings.
02
Makassar (UPG) is the southern gateway, with direct flights from Jakarta, Bali and Kuala Lumpur. Manado (MDC) serves the north and Bunaken. Kendari (KDI) is the door to Wakatobi, followed by a boat or a small flight to Wangi-Wangi.
03
The Makassar–Toraja road takes seven to eight hours; night buses are common but the daytime scenery is the reason to go. Fly Makassar–Manado rather than drive. On Bunaken everything is a boat or a footpath. In Toraja, hire a driver for the day.
A route that works
Two nights near the waterfront. Eat coto for breakfast and take the morning canoe at Rammang-Rammang.
Drive inland to Rantepao. One day for Kete Kesu and the cliff graves, one for Batutumonga and the rice terraces.
Fly north, eat Minahasan food, and sort out a boat transfer for the morning.
Three nights on the island: two morning dives, one afternoon snorkel, and a walk around the village.
Boat back before noon. The flight south leaves in the afternoon.
