Lake Toba seen from the hills of North Sumatra, with green shorelines and dark water

Region 01 / 07

Sumatra

A volcano the size of a country, a lake with an island inside it, and a highland culture that kept its own architecture. Sumatra is the long way round — and that is the point.

9 days Medan in, Padang out May to October

The shape of the trip

One island, two very different journeys

Sumatra runs more than 1,700 kilometres along the western edge of Indonesia, held together by the Bukit Barisan range. The north is Batak country: Lake Toba, stone tombs and the rainforest of Gunung Leuser. The centre-west is Minangkabau: matrilineal clans, buffalo-horn roofs and a crater lake ringed by hairpins.

Most travellers pick one half. The two fit together if you have nine days and don't mind a flight in the middle. What you will not find is a fast train: outside the Medan airport link, Sumatra moves by road, and the road is part of the trip.

Don’t miss

Four places that justify the road

Each one is a half-day or more. None of them are day trips from Medan.

Lake Toba and its green shoreline in North Sumatra North Sumatra

Lake Toba

The caldera left by a super-eruption about 74,000 years ago is nearly 100 kilometres long. Come for the scale, stay for the quiet.

Samosir Island rising out of Lake Toba Samosir

Batak villages on Samosir

Tongkonan houses, carved stone tombs and a church on every ridge. The island is the size of Singapore and considerably slower.

A lar gibbon in Gunung Leuser National Park Aceh border

Gunung Leuser

Orangutans, gibbons and one of the last great lowland rainforests in Southeast Asia. Bukit Lawang is the usual base.

Lake Maninjau in the West Sumatra highlands West Sumatra

Maninjau & Bukittinggi

A crater lake at the bottom of the Kelok 44 road, with the Minangkabau capital an hour away and the food worth the detour alone.

Practical

When to go, how to move

01

When to go

May to October is the drier half of the year across most of the island. The highlands are cool year-round: 15–20°C at night around Toba and Berastagi. December to March is wet, especially on the west coast, and the roads pay for it.

02

Getting there

Kualanamu (KNO) serves Medan with direct flights from Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Minangkabau (PDG) serves Padang. Silangit (DTB) is the small airport beside Toba, useful if you want to skip the drive from Medan.

03

Getting around

Long-distance buses are frequent and cheap; the Medan–Bukittinggi run is a full day. A car with a driver costs more but stops where you want. The Parapat–Tuk Tuk ferry is the classic way onto Samosir. There is no intercity railway.
